How to handle a traffic ticket

This guide currently covers Nebraska only. The check and the map already cover all 50 states — start there for anywhere else.

Not legal advice. This page is general information with links to official sources. For your situation, contact the court or a licensed attorney.

Paying

  • Minor tickets can often be paid without appearing — only if the citation is marked "waiver allowed." Paying online is a waiver of appearance and a plea of guilty.
  • Official payment: Nebraska Judicial Branch Internet Payment System
  • The DMV does not take ticket payments; its FAQ points to the court payment system.
  • The official payment site warns: do not pay online if a court appearance is required (DUI, driving on a suspended license, no insurance, and others).

Appearing

  • If the citation requires an appearance, or you want to contest it, you appear in the county court of the county where the stop happened.
  • Hearing dates by date or last name: court calendars (calendars show scheduled hearings; they are not a ticket warehouse).

Traffic school / dismissal options

  • Some counties offer dismissal-on-completion programs for eligible minor violations. Eligibility is decided by the county attorney, not by this site.
  • Ask the county court clerk what exists in your county — numbers are on the county cards in the check wizard.

If you missed it

  • Missing a court date can add penalties, including a warrant or license suspension, depending on the charge. Do not ignore it.
  • Call the county court clerk promptly — the numbers are on the county cards in the check wizard.
